Habitat: pine-dominated dissected upland with beech-magnolia bottoms. Wet bottoms with Illicium, Magnolia virginiana, Osmanthus, Symplocos, Myrica inodora, Ilex coriaceae. Rhizgonium spiniforme is dominant along streams; common on tree bases in ravines
