Habitat: Terrestrial, forming huge dense low mat in shallow flat bottom of depression between criss-crossed fallen logs, rooted in decaying organic matter (mostly white-cedar branchlets & cones) w/ Amblyostegium serpens & a few diminutive Pilea fontana plants. Thuja occidentalis swamp, floor very uneven, carpeted w/ abundant bryophytes
Associated Species: other trees (Abies, Tsuga, Betula alleghaniensis, Fraxinus nigra) & shrubs (Acer spicatum) sparse, groundlayer diverse: Aralia nudicaulis, Athyrium, Caltha, Carex bromoides, Circaea alpina, Cornus canadensis, Glyceria striata, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Maianthemum, Onoclea, Osmunda regalis, Ribes triste, Solidago patula, Symplocarpus, etc.
