Habitat: mesic oak-pine forest on very rough, broken ground, with epiphytic mosses and lichens and many ferns: forest understory with Baccharis (dominant), Arbutus, Fuchsia, Pernettya, Gaultheria, Geranium seemannii, Pinguicula moranensis on peaty mulch
